Systems Thinking and Deep Experience

Updated: Dec 30, 2021

I wanted to share this inspirational piece of writing by Fritjof Capra and Pier Luigi Luisis. It is the introduction to their 2014 book The Systems View of Life. In their discussion of "paradigms in science and society" they articulate why we need to reorganize how science is typically taught at the high school level. Based on work like this the EARTH School curriculum puts Biology and Earth Sciences at the forefront.

If you don't have time to read the whole thing, the final section on "Deep Ecology" offers an explanation of what is meant in the EARTH School mission statement by "deep experience" and why it is so important. This is the basis for the integration of Science and the Humanities through community-based experiential learning. The result is the empowering of young people through their community connections.
