Intersectional Spectrums

Updated: Dec 30, 2021

The following article about autism and gender diversity creates a more intersectional understanding of both spectrums. Thanks to Spectrum News and Laura Dattaro for reporting on this.

In my experience youth on either spectrum often struggle in secondary education environments. The stress on teens of being a double minority is something that educators and families need to be aware of.

"Largest study to date confirms overlap between autism and gender diversity"

I was a bit miffed that "lower rates of empathy" was described as an autistic trait in the study, but happy to see where the reporter embedded a link to an article about autism and empath. The linked article addresses the complexity of recognizing and responding to the emotions of others and the harm caused by stereotypes about autistic people lacking empathy. Thank you! Here is a link to that article.
