At Environmental Action through Research and Technology High (EARTH) School, our values guide every decision we make — from what we teach to how we build community. We believe that education should prepare students for shaping a better world.

Mastery-Based Flexible Crediting

Learning isn't about seat time - it's about deep understanding.

Students at EARTH School earn credit by demonstrating mastery, not by completing a set number of hours in a classroom. Whether through a traditional course, an independent project, or a field-based experience, credit is awarded when students show they’ve truly learned the material.

This flexible system allows students to:

  • Move ahead in areas of strength

  • Spend more time when needed to master a concept

  • Earn credit through internships, community-based research, and project-based learning

Students track their own growth through portfolios, performance tasks, and reflection, supported by advisors and content-area guides.

Individualized Graduation Plans

There's more than one path to success.

Every student at EARTH School develops a personalized graduation plan based on their interests, strengths, and post-secondary goals. Whether aiming for college, the workforce, a gap year, or a career in sustainability, students craft a roadmap that makes sense for them and adapt it as they grow.

With support from their advisor, each student:

Graduation isn’t a one-size-fits-all checklist. It’s a journey that evolves with each student.

Courses and Competencies

A framework for real learning.

Our academic program is structured around competencies — key skills and knowledge areas that prepare students for college, career, and civic life. Courses and projects are designed to help students build and demonstrate these competencies through engaging, interdisciplinary work.

Examples of core competencies include:

  • Scientific Investigation

  • Systems Thinking

  • Effective Communication

  • Argumentation

  • Teamwork

  • And more…

Courses are offered in traditional subjects (like Algebra, Biology, English) but are often integrated into larger cross-disciplinary themes. Students may also design their own coursework with faculty mentorship.
